EV home charging in Dublin: what to check before installation

Start with your parking arrangement

Draw a simple plan showing your usual parking space, the house entrance and the proposed charger position. Think about where the car charging port sits when you park forwards or backwards.

Do not assume that a cable can be run across a public footpath. If your property has no off-street parking, investigate the relevant permissions and the current scheme requirements before committing to a solution. For shared parking, establish who owns the space and who can authorise work.

Ask for a property-specific assessment

Give the installer the charger model you are considering and explain your typical driving and charging routine. Ask them to assess electrical capacity, the proposed cable route and whether additional work is needed.

Request separate details for the charger, installation, any necessary upgrades and making good. A nearby parking space does not automatically mean the route from the electrical supply is short or straightforward.

Check SEAI before work begins

At the research date, SEAI lists support of up to €300 under its home charger grant. Its conditions include using a Safe Electric Registered Electrical Contractor, an eligible smart charger and not starting work before the offer start date. Confirm the current terms directly with SEAI before applying or purchasing.

A grant is subject to eligibility and approval; it should not be treated as a guaranteed discount in your budget.

Plan everyday use

Discuss cable storage, weather exposure and keeping the route clear for people using the driveway. Check whether the smart features depend on a reliable Wi-Fi or mobile connection in that location. Ask for a demonstration of scheduling and what to do if connectivity is lost.

Agree the handover

Before accepting a quotation, ask which testing records, certificates, warranties and grant documents will be supplied. Keep copies together with the charger model and installer details. Tell us your parking arrangement when requesting a quote so the initial conversation can address the right questions.
