Walk through the house after dark

Make a note of areas that feel uncomfortable or inconvenient. Is the kitchen worktop in shadow when you stand at it? Do you cross a dark room to reach a switch? Does a bright ceiling light make the living room difficult to relax in?

These observations form a more useful brief than a request to simply add more spotlights. Take wide room photographs and mark the positions of furniture that will remain.

Separate the jobs light needs to do

In the kitchen, discuss work surfaces and dining separately. In a living room, consider whether a reading position needs its own light. In a hallway, explain the route between the entrance, stairs and adjoining rooms.

For bedrooms, include wardrobes and bedside use in the conversation. If two people use the room differently, write down both requirements so the controls can be considered together.

Compare fittings before committing

Ask to see product information for the proposed lamps and fittings. Discuss light appearance, dimming compatibility, replacement options and how accessible they will be for maintenance. A fitting that looks good in a photograph may feel different in your room.

Avoid selecting colour and brightness solely from a screen. Where possible, compare examples in person, especially if adjoining rooms need a consistent appearance.

Coordinate with decorating

Agree the installation sequence before booking the final painting. Ask whether accessing the wiring will disturb ceilings or walls and who is responsible for restoring the finish. For bathrooms and outdoor areas, have the contractor select suitable fittings for the actual location rather than choosing by appearance alone.

Leave electrical decisions to the contractor
