Planning electrical work in Dublin: how to request a clear quote

Describe the result you want

Write down what does not work for your household: too few sockets near the desk, an awkward light switch or poor lighting over a worktop. Describe the intended use rather than prescribing a wiring solution. The contractor can then assess the installation and explain what is feasible.

For a Dublin apartment, mention access arrangements and any building-management requirements. For an occupied house, say which rooms must remain available during the work.

Send useful information safely

Include your area or Eircode, a list of rooms, preferred timing and photographs taken from a normal standing position. Photograph the outside of the consumer unit only if it is safely accessible. Do not remove covers or expose wiring to obtain a quotation.

State whether decorating is already booked. This gives everyone an opportunity to discuss making good before new paint or finishes are applied.

Compare the scope, not just the total

Ask each contractor to identify the fittings included, access assumptions, testing, documentation and any exclusions. Clarify whether patching or repainting is included, and how extra work discovered during the visit will be agreed.

A quote for installing customer-supplied fittings is different from a quote that includes selecting and supplying them. Send the same brief to each contractor so these differences are visible.

Check who will carry out the work

The CRU advises householders to use a Registered Electrical Contractor and to obtain completion documentation. Check the contractor in the Safe Electric register before engaging them; a website or van logo is not a substitute for checking. See the CRU guidance below.

Keep the handover together

Save the agreed scope, invoices, product information and any certificates in one folder. Ask who to contact if something needs attention after the installation. That record is more useful than relying on a chain of messages months later.
