Choosing bathroom tiles: questions to ask before ordering

Identify where each tile will go

Separate the main floor, shower area, other walls and decorative details in your plan. Ask the supplier to confirm the intended use of the exact product you choose. Do not assume a wall tile is suitable for a floor or that every finish within a collection has the same properties.

Keep the product code and technical information with your sample so the installer can review the specification before purchase.

Discuss the surface, not just the colour

Ask specifically about suitability for the proposed wet area, slip-resistance information and cleaning requirements. Manufacturers such as RAK publish product-specific surface information; check the particular tile rather than relying on a general material label.

Compare the sample dry and under the bathroom lighting. Think about how visible water marks and grout will be, and which cleaning routine you are prepared to maintain.

Agree a layout with the installer

Mark where edges, trims, niches and changes of material will occur. Ask how the chosen size and pattern fit the actual room dimensions. A photograph from a larger bathroom can conceal cuts that become prominent in a compact room.

Let the installer confirm quantities and an appropriate allowance for cuts or replacements before ordering. Ask about batch consistency and keep spare tiles from the delivered batch where practical.

Discuss what goes beneath the finish

Ask who is assessing the existing surfaces and specifying the preparation and wet-area system. Treat this as part of the renovation scope, not an afterthought once the tiles arrive. Product compatibility and application requirements should be checked by the installer against the relevant manufacturer information.

Confirm delivery before the start date

Check stock, delivery access and how damage or missing items will be handled. Open and inspect the order with the supplier’s instructions in mind before it is needed on site. Send your tile shortlist and bathroom photographs when requesting a quote so any practical concerns can be discussed early.
