Laminate vs Vinyl Flooring: Which Is Better for Irish Homes?
Neither laminate nor vinyl is automatically better for every Irish home. Choose a product that suits the room, base and daily use, then compare the total installed scope. A bedroom may need a different solution from a busy kitchen.
Begin with how the room is used
Think about traffic, cleaning, moisture exposure and your preferred finish. View samples beside your existing doors, skirting and furniture. A photograph can look different from a sample in your own lighting.
Do not assume every product in a category has the same suitability. Kitchen and bathroom use must be checked against the exact product instructions, including edge and installation requirements.
Compare fitting systems, not just labels
Laminate systems commonly use a floating click installation with product-specific underlay and edge allowances. Vinyl includes click and adhesive-fixed products. Some products have an integrated layer; others specify separate underlay.
We review the selected product before confirming the method. This matters when the existing base, finished height or transitions between rooms limit the options.
The base matters for both choices
Changing the surface does not remove a problem underneath. Assess the base before either system is installed. Preparation affects budget and schedule regardless of the finish.

Compare the whole estimate
Compare materials, old-floor removal, preparation, fitting, skirting and thresholds together. A lower product price does not necessarily mean a lower project price if preparation or finishing differs.
If decorating at the same time, decide how the floor and skirting meet the planned paintwork. Agree the sequence so finishing tasks are not left out of both quotations.
