Interior painting costs in Dublin: what a quote should include

List every surface

For each room, identify whether you want walls, ceilings, skirting boards, doors, frames or radiators included. Note any wallpaper, staining, peeling finish or previous repairs. Send photographs showing the whole room and close views of the areas that need attention.

Mention high ceilings, stairwells and large pieces of furniture. These details help the painter plan access and explain which tasks are included.

Separate preparation from decoration

Ask what filling, sanding, priming or stain treatment is included and what happens if the condition beneath an old finish differs from what was visible. Preparation and drying time need to be allowed for; Fleetwood also emphasises these when planning decorating projects.

If there is ongoing damp or a leak, explain it before booking. A fresh coat of paint should not be treated as a solution to the underlying source of moisture.

Agree the material specification

Record the colour, finish and product range for each surface. Clarify who supplies the paint and whether a major colour change affects the proposed work. Ask how the painter will confirm that the final coverage is satisfactory rather than assuming every room needs an identical treatment.

Plan around an occupied home

Tell the painter if you work from home, have limited storage or need bedrooms available overnight. Agree who moves furniture and removes curtains, how floors are protected and which route remains clear during the job.

For apartments, mention lift access and permitted work hours. For a house, discuss parking and where materials can be stored without obstructing daily life.

Compare like-for-like quotations

Check that both quotes cover the same rooms, preparation, materials, waste removal and final touch-ups. Ask whether the quoted total includes applicable taxes. Keep optional work separate and agree how changes will be priced.
